Kızkalesi is a coastal town in the Erdemli district of Mersin, named after the castle that stands 200 metres offshore. Its population grows tenfold in summer, and it suits anyone looking for history and sea in the same place.
What Not to Miss
Kızkalesi (the Sea Castle)
The symbol of the town, five minutes from the shore by boat. For photographs at sunset, the best time is after 19:00.
Korykos Castle
The land castle facing the sea castle. Entry is free and the view of the sea from the walls is superb.
The Heaven and Hell Sinkholes
Natural collapse caves five kilometres from Kızkalesi. Reaching the floor of the Heaven sinkhole means 452 steps, so comfortable shoes are essential.
Adamkayalar
Roman-era reliefs carved into the rock face. The road is narrow, which makes going by private car far more comfortable.
Getting to Kızkalesi from the Airport
Kızkalesi is roughly 100 km from Çukurova Airport and takes about 85 minutes. The route runs along the motorway to Mersin, then follows the coast road towards Erdemli.
By public transport you would take a bus from the airport to Mersin, then a minibus to Erdemli, then a local dolmuş to Kızkalesi — three changes with your suitcases. That is why a private transfer is the most popular choice in this part of the coast.
Where to Stay
- The seafront: hotels right on the water, within walking distance of the beach
- Ayaş: quieter, mostly apartments and holiday homes
- Susanoğlu: family-friendly properties and small coves
When to Go
The swimming season opens at the end of May and runs to mid-October. July and August are the busiest months; June and September are calmer, with the sea at an ideal temperature.
